Did you hear the piece on Morning Edition last week http://www.npr.org/2013/08/20/213551358/how-to-win-that-music-competition-send-a-video?  Makes you wonder when an award or an application requires a photo whether it hurts or helps your application over and above the qualifications you have.

  • I heard that story also.  I guess if you emote well, the judges will think you are playing well.  As to using photos on applications, I belong to an international civic organization that in the past required a photo be sent in with nomination packages.  They stopped that requirement on the advice that it could lead to charges of discrimination.  A search of the literature will show that bias does exist against "unattractive" people, and racial and sexual biases are still out there.
